Cop Catches Teen Smoking Pot, Makes Him Do 200 Pushups Instead of Jail Time

In Arlington, Texas, a local teen was caught smoking marijuana by a police officer outside a movie theater.

He was fortunate that the officer that confronted him was Officer Eric Ball, who, instead of arresting him on the spot, ordered the teen to drop and give him 200 push-ups, according to WFAA.

This unorthodox corporal punishment was recorded by another movie-goer, Raiza Paredez, and posted to Facebook, where the video has garnered nearly a quarter of a million views.

“Big UP’s to the Arlington Police Officer that made the young black guy that decided to smoke weed on the movie theater parking lot to do push-ups (rather than) take him to jail or shoot him just Cuz,” she captioned the video. “We need more cops like this. #Policeeverywhereneedtotakenotes #ArlingtonPoliceDept”

Punishment that deviates from the norm, especially corporal punishment, is often intensely scrutinized and looked down upon. However, in this case, the punishment has enjoyed a warm reception.

Even the teen’s mother was in Ball’s corner, according to WFAA. A fellow officer said, “She gave a stern warning to her son and even told the officer, ‘I would have made him do more push-ups.’”

Furthermore, according to WFAA, while Arlington police acknowledged that Ball’s actions were not procedure, they suppored “the officer’s use of his discretion.”

In a time where officers are often threatened for using even the most routine methods to do their jobs, it is good to see one officer being praised for thinking outside-the-box in his mission to curtail crime.
