Do we all love national parks? Of course we do. Power-hungry land grabs? Not so much.
The White House was so gleeful that it even bragged about it on its Twitter feed, showing a photo that looked oddly familiar. It was a stock photo of Arches National Park. Wrong legislation, wrong timing, wrong photo. Another Obama trifecta.
State officials were quick to respond, vowing to do everything possible, both in the courts and with President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, to derail the act, according to The Washington Examiner.
“My office is working closely with the governor’s office, federal and state legislators, and San Juan County to file a lawsuit challenging this egregious overreach by the Obama administration,” Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes said.
Reyes also said, “By significantly restricting access to a large portion of public lands in Utah, the President weakens land management capabilities and fails to protect those the Antiquities Act intended to benefit.”
Congressional Republicans have also vowed to fight back. Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz said that by using the Antiquities Act to create the national monuments, Obama destroyed a bipartisan compromise already in the works.
Obama created the monument under the American Antiquities Act of 1906 and has often come under fire for what family ranching groups call “Antiquities Abuse.” He has used his executive power to create national monuments 29 times during his presidency for more than 553 million acres of federal lands and waters, according to The Washington Post.
All well and good, except that we are not just a scenic and beautiful nation; we are a country of cattle, oil, mining, farming and the American families and consumers who depend on those industries.
Fox News, in reporting the act, suggested that part of Obama’s timing may have been “to tie (President-elect) Trump’s hands.”
Obama isn’t just trying to tie Trump’s hands; he’s trying to compromise the very fabric of our nation.
