FBI Director James Comey is seeking a pubic repudiation of allegations made by President Donald Trump that the Obama administration wiretapped Trump Tower before the November election.

Comey also denied the wiretapping took place, a claim that the White House has not yet accepted.

Early Saturday, as reported by Western Journalism, Trump issued a stream of tweets alleging that during the Obama administration, Trump Tower was wiretapped. Trump’s tweets followed allegations in the conservative media that federal agencies had been seeking to conduct surveillance of Trump Tower since last June. The reports suggested that the initial surveillance target was a Russian bank located in Trump Tower.

The New York Times reported Saturday that Comey is asking for a Justice Department statement clearing the FBI of any involvement. The Times said Comey does not want to be seen as having broken the law.

On Monday, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked if Trump accepted Comey’s version of events that the FBI was not involved.

“No, I don’t think he does,” Sanders said on ABC’s Good Morning America.

She said Trump “wants the truth to come out to the American people and he is asking that it be done through the House Intelligence Committee and that that be the process that we go through.”

One issue complicating the Justice Department’s response to the matter is Attorney General Jeff Sessions decision last week to recuse himself from all aspects of any investigation into connections between the Trump campaign and Russia, which is the presumed subject of the alleged wiretapping.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Sunday called the reports about “potentially politically motivated investigations” before the 2016 presidential election “very troubling” and called for a full investigation.

Obama’s spokesman said Saturday that Trump’s accusations were false.
