Clinton Campaign Backs Electors Seeking Intel About Alleged Russian Involvement In Election

The Clinton campaign is backing efforts by members of the Electoral College to have in intelligence briefing about possible foreign involvement in the election before they gather to vote on Dec. 19.

“The bipartisan electors’ letter raises very grave issues involving our national security,” top Hillary Clinton adviser John Podesta said in a statement Monday Politico reported. “Electors have a solemn responsibility under the Constitution and we support their efforts to have their questions addressed.”

“Each day that month, our campaign decried the interference of Russia in our campaign and its evident goal of hurting our campaign to aid Donald Trump,” he added. “Despite our protestations, this matter did not receive the attention it deserved by the media in the campaign. We now know that the CIA has determined Russia’s interference in our elections was for the purpose of electing Donald Trump. This should distress every American.”

As reported by Western Journalism, a group of 10 electors from the Electoral College requested more information Monday on the ongoing investigation surrounding U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Russia.

In an open letter addressed to Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, the electors stated they would need additional details before meeting on Dec. 19 to formally vote for the country’s next president.

The letter was posted on Medium by Christine Pelosi, a California elector and daughter of House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.

On Fox News Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump was asked about the Washington Post story, which ran on Friday titled, “Secret CIA Assessment Says Russia Was Trying To Help Trump Win White House.”

“I think it’s ridiculous. I think it’s just another excuse. I don’t believe it. I don’t know why, and I think it’s just — you know, they talked about all sorts of things. Every week, it’s another excuse,” he replied.

“So, why would the CIA put out this story that the Russians wanted you to win?” host Chris Wallace followed up.

“I’m not sure they put it out. I think the Democrats are putting it out because they suffered one of the greatest defeats in the history of politics in this country. And, frankly, I think they’re putting it out. It’s ridiculous,” the president-elect responded.

During the race, the Clinton campaign and fellow Democrats blamed the Russians for being behind the hack of the Democrat National Committee, which resulted in embarrassing emails being released by WikiLeaks.

The Clinton team also supported Green Party Candidate Jill Stein’s recount efforts in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan, though Clinton described any efforts not to accept the election results as “horrifying” in a debate prior to election day.

Clinton has pointed to “fake news” and FBI Director James Comey as reasons Trump won the election.
