President-elect Donald Trump made waves several weeks ago when he took a call from the president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen — a call that irritated China to no end.
On Monday, one of China’s state-run tabloids issued a blistering threat to Trump, saying that China would “take revenge” if Trump reversed the “One China policy” that has been a staple of U.S. foreign policy for decades, Reuters reported.
“If Trump reneges on the one-China policy after taking office, the Chinese people will demand the government to take revenge. There is no room for bargaining,” the Global Times editorial stated.
The “One China policy” has been the official foreign policy of the United States toward the Taiwan-China problem. Under this policy, Taiwan has been officially recognized as a part of China, even though the United States still sends military and economic aid to Taiwan to help them deter any Chinese military action as if Taiwan were an independent nation.
Time noted that the article also threatened more military action against the nation of Taiwan if their president, who stopped in the United States on Monday to meet with Republican lawmakers, but not the president-elect, did not stop taking “provocative step(s).”
Throughout his campaign, Trump has made it clear that under his watch America won’t tolerate any more bullying from China, so it is unclear how he will respond to this latest threat.
Trump has not revealed much about what his plans for Taiwan are. At a news briefing on Dec. 31, Trump said that if Taiwan’s president visited the U.S. after his inauguration, he would possibly meet with her, CNBC reported.
China is obviously incredibly nervous about what Trump might choose to do with Taiwan. Unlike President Barack Obama, Trump likes to keep everyone guessing what his foreign policy is in hopes of keeping America’s enemies off-balance.
While Obama has been afraid to shake up the international system, Trump has indicated that he has to qualms about changing the way things have been in hopes that they can get better.
