There’s a reason why Chick-fil-A is our favorite quick service restaurant chain, and it’s not just because the Spicy Chicken Deluxe Sandwich is worth breaking any diet for. It’s the fact that, unlike other establishments of similar size, their Christian values lead them to care about their customers in ways other establishments wouldn’t dream of.
Take the case of Laura Byrne. In 2009, Laura and her family drove into Raleigh from the small town of Princeton, North Carolina, to drop her husband, Kevin, off at the airport. It wasn’t just for a short business trip, though — Kevin was going to be deployed in Afghanistan for a year.
“I was overwhelmed,” Byrne said. “That was the first time he had ever been deployed … I didn’t know what to expect.”
On the way back from the airport, the family stopped in a Chick-fil-A in Durham, North Carolina.
“From a customer’s standpoint, you never really know what’s happening with them,” Durham store operator John White IV said. “They could be on cloud 9 and just as excited as they can be, or they could be having just the worst day ever.”
And the Byrne family certainly was having a bad day. It was made even worse when Byrne’s 8-month-old son, who could only eat baby food, smacked his jar of it onto the floor.
“I had sat the baby food right in front of Luke, and as soon as I set it in front and turned the other way, he wiped it right off the table.”
“So she looks at me and says, ‘What am I going to do? That’s the only jar of baby food I had with me!’” Byrne’s mother, Sandy Thomas, recalled.
John White IV saw the baby food spill. White came over and cleaned the spill up, and then asked Byrne an unusual question — what kind of baby food it was. Then he sent someone out to buy another jar of it for the family.
“So Terry came up, she was working the dining room,” White recalled. “And we looked at each other, and she just took off with her purse … and went and came back with some baby food.”
This is why America loves Chick-fil-A — and while we’ll keep on loving it, no matter how much it gets liberals angry.
