Our neighbors to the south know that president-elect Donald Trump means business. For one CEO, that has a double meaning.
Enrique Escalante, chief executive officer of Mexican concrete company Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua, wanted the contract to build the border wall that will help curb illegal immigration, according to Reuters.
Trump’s plans to invest in energy and infrastructure in the United States were great for his company, Escalante said. Business is business, and clearly, business loves Trump.
The Trump campaign gained its foothold with American voters by vowing to address the illegal immigration issue. Central to the incoming president’s plan was a 2,000 wall along the southern U.S.border. Countless Mexicans and individuals from other nations currently cross the ineffective existing border daily, mostly by foot and in vehicles.
Trump is widely reviled in Mexico, and this move to cooperate in his plans could be very risky for a Mexican company. The situation is complex for Trump as well: He has promised to put Americans back to work, and GCC hires a LOT of American workers on our side of the border.
Just prior to the election, fearful of Trump’s success, illegal immigrants swarmed over the border, as reported by The Washington Post. Part of the border is already fenced, and much of it is divided by the Rio Grande River. But that hasn’t stopped many millions of illegal immigrants from crossing into the country.
Escalante is a businessman and understands opportunity. GCC has three plants in the U.S. and generates around 70 percent of its business here.
“We can’t be choosy,” he said. “We’re an important producer in that area and we have to respect our clients on both sides of the border.”
Not only would GCC NOT outsource these jobs to Mexico if they win the contract; they will expand their American workforce to 3,500. Clearly, GCC understands that a Trump America will be once again the land of opportunity.
Hmmm … Mexican jobs being outsourced to the U.S. President Trump may want to jump on this idea in a couple of months.
