When supports of Donald Trump knew Election Night was going his way and those around him were rejoicing, America’s next president was soberly looking at the job ahead to be done, Trump supporter Ben Carson said Wednesday.

“He was quite somber,” Carson told Yahoo news anchor Katie Couric.

Carson, a one-time opponent of Trump in the Republican presidential primaries, was among the supporters and family members with Trump at Trump Tower Tuesday night as the election returns slowly showed Trump had defeated Hillary Clinton.

“I think really reflecting on the tremendous responsibility that was going to be on his shoulders,” Carson said. “He was not leaping for joy — he was much more contemplative.”

Carson said Trump knows that leading and governing is serious business, and that Americans will see that side of Trump in the years to come.

“He wanted to wait until we had all the results in before making any definitive statements,” Carson said. “I think that kind of shows and gives us some insight into what kind of president he’s going to be. I don’t think he’s going to go off half-cocked.”

Carson said Trump’s leadership style is far more complex than the shoot-from-the-hip style it appears to be in public.

“I think he’s going to be waiting, listening, weighing options, talking to people. And I think that’s one of the inappropriate impressions people have gotten about him, that he’s sort of brash and impulsive. And he really isn’t,” Carson said.

Carson said the Trump of the past two weeks — focused and disciplined — is the Trump who will govern.

“He really was much more contained and really didn’t chase down any rabbit holes, didn’t respond to every accusation that was made about him, and acted in a much more presidential way. And I think we’re going to see much more of that,” Carson said.

Carson said that he hopes as more people work with the president-elect, they will understand the man behind the myth.

“I think actually a lot of the people who have tried to demonize him will be quite shocked when they see who (Trump) really is,” Carson said. “He’ll be a very easy person to work with as long as you’re reasonable, as long as you’re fair.”
