The unprecedented media manipulation of the truth directed against Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump threatens to undercut one of the foundations of American democracy, former presidential candidate Ben Carson said Thursday.
Speaking on Fox and Friends, Carson singled out the New York Times for its recent allegations that Trump touched women inappropriately many years ago. Trump has denied the claims and demanded a retraction, something the Times has refused to do.
“It’s very disappointing because our system was set up in such a way that the press was supposed to keep the people informed so that the will of the people could direct the country. But when the press decides that they want to become biased, it completely distorts the system and this is what we’ve experienced now,” Carson said.
Carson said rather than reporting news, the media is now seeking out what fits its narrative
“There’s an atmosphere that’s been created by the New York Times and others that says ‘Look, if you’re willing to come out and say something, we’ll give you fame, w’’ll give you whatever you need’… what a bunch of crap,” he continued.
Carson said that the American people need to be able to pierce the screen of media falsehood for the sake of the nation.
“The people have to see through this because again the train is going off the cliff. Our country is going off the cliff financially and so many other ways. If we don’t deal with this stuff now, our children are completely going to be disadvantaged and destroyed, their future will be destroyed,” he said.
Carson had said last week in a Saturday interview with Newsmax that after the leaked 2005 video that showed Trump using lewd language about women, more assaults on Trump’s character were going to follow.
He said on Fox and Friends Thursday that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign and Trump’s enemies will “parcel them out to keep the spotlight on Trump because they don’t want to deal with the issues – this is exactly what’s happening.”
Carson said voters are being distracted so that political elites can retain control.
“This is so predictable and the question is, will the American people be smart enough to see beyond the manipulation that is going on so that the political class can contain and keep their power. This is the real issue, it’s about the political class versus the people.”
Carson said Saturday the alliance between the media and the Clinton campaign has skewed things against Trump.
” … because they have the arm of the media it makes it very easy for them to get across what they’re doing. Unless people understand what’s going on,” he said.
The election, Carson insisted, is not a referendum on Trump or Clinton, but about the “direction of the country.”
“It’s about the elites and the status quo being desperate to maintain their position and this direction vs. a change in direction that’s desperately needed,” he said. “The political class and the media has to make this about Donald Trump. They cannot make this about the issues.”
