An old saying goes that America was built on God, guns and Old Glory. We don’t know how Kay Dickinson feels about the American flag, but given her love of the Bible and guns, we can probably make a pretty good guess.

According to WWAY-TV, the Wilmington, North Carolina, resident was alive after she fought off a home intruder and used a gun perched atop her Bible to shoot him dead.

The Wilmington Star News reported that Dickinson was arriving home to her apartment at 11 p.m. Monday. As she went to her apartment, she noticed a man putting out a trash bag. She didn’t think anything of it, and continued talking on the phone with her father.

The next thing she knew, the man with the trash bag had turned around and grabbed her, shoving her inside her apartment. She then saw that the man had a gun.

“We had a tussle and he choked me and gagged me and I dropped everything right there in the kitchen,” Dickinson said. “He knew my name, he knew my boyfriend’s name, and he was like, ‘Give me the money.’”

He then proceeded to tie her hands behind her back with a belt and tied her mouth with a phone cord. “He kept saying, ‘Give me the money, give me the money,’” Dickinson said.

While the man was ransacking her house, assumedly looking for some sort of money, Dickinson managed to break free. She got the gun from on top of her Bible and fired one shot at the man, hitting him in the chest.

“I got loose from the belt. And I had a gun sitting on a Bible on my headboard. I jumped up on the bed, grabbed the gun, turned around and just pulled the trigger,” Dickinson said.

He ran down the hallway before collapsing. Willie Franklin Stith III, 35, was identified as the man whom she shot. He had multiple convictions, for burglary, breaking and entering, heroin possession, firearms possession by a felon, assault of a public official and other fun charges.

In an interview with the Star News, Dickinson said she was thrilled that she had the opportunity to defend herself.

“As soon as he took me in the bedroom I looked over and the gun was sitting there and I was like, ‘There’s a reason why that gun is sitting there,’” Dickinson said. “I was just hoping he wouldn’t see it.”
