Two men who perpetrated a mass shooting at a mosque in Quebec City in Canada yelled “Allahu akbar!” as they shot praying Muslims, according to news reports.
The New York Times reports that two gunmen have been taken into custody. Constable Pierre Poirier, Quebec city police spokesman, said the two men who killed six and wounded eight at the Islamic Cultural Center of Quebec Sunday night were the only attackers involved. About 40 worshippers were in the mosque when the attack took place at about 8 p.m.
French-language newspaper Le Soleil reported that one of the suspects, a 27-year-old man, had a “Quebecois name,” raising questions about Islamist terrorism as a possible motive.
However, one witness did tell Radio-Canada that the two men, who were carrying AK-47s, had yelled “Allahu akbar” — which means “Allah is great” in Arabic — during the attack. Islamic terrorists have made the phrase synonymous with acts of murder in the name of religion.
“It seemed to me that they had a Quebecois accent. They started to fire, and as they shot they yelled, ‘Allahu akbar!’ The bullets hit people that were praying. People who were praying lost their lives. A bullet passed right over my head,” the witness said.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the attack.
“It was with tremendous shock, sadness and anger that I heard of this evening’s tragic and fatal shooting at the Centre culturel islamique de Quebec located in the Ste-Foy neighborhood of the city of Quebec,” Trudeau said in a statement, calling the shooting a “terrorist attack on Muslims.”
“Muslim-Canadians are an important part of our national fabric, and these senseless acts have no place in our communities, cities and country.”
It was reported that a pig’s head had been left on the front door of the mosque in June during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
