The thugs of the Islamic State group had better watch out. Come this January, President Donald Trump is going to have a “Mad Dog” coming for them.
According to The Hill, President-elect Trump announced that retired Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis, a former Marine Corps general who led U.S. Central Command until 2013, would be his pick for secretary of defense.
The Washington Post first reported the pick on Thursday afternoon. Trump then confirmed it with his typical sense of humor.
“We are going to appoint ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis as our secretary of Defense,” Trump told the crowd in Cincinnati, Ohio. “But we’re not announcing until Monday, so don’t tell anybody.”

According to the BBC, Mattis’ military experience goes back to the first Gulf War, when he lead an assault battalion. He also played a part in the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan and the 2003 invasion of Iran. During the latter, he played an important part in the battle of Fallujah.
More recently, “Mad Dog” has been a pointed critic of President Barack Obama’s policies on Iran.
He will also be charged with implementing Trump’s tough stance on the Islamic State group, an area where the “Mad Dog” in him will definitely serve America well.
The appointment was applauded by Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican who will conduct Mattis’ confirmation hearing as head of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
““I have had the privilege of knowing Gen. Mattis for many years,” McCain said in a statement. “He is without a doubt one of the finest military officers of his generation and an extraordinary leader who inspires a rare and special admiration of his troops. Gen. Mattis has a clear understanding of the many challenges facing the Department of Defense, the U.S. military, and our national security.
“America will be fortunate to have Gen. Mattis in its service once again,” McCain added.
Rumors regarding Mattis‘ appointment had swirled since Trump’s meeting with the retired general at his golf course two weeks ago, especially after Trump described Mattis as “the real deal.” In an interview with The New York Times, Trump had said that Mattis had given him something to think about regarding so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques.”
“He said, ‘I’ve always found, give me a pack of cigarettes and a couple of beers and I do better with that than I do with torture,’” Trump said. “And I was very impressed by that answer. I was surprised, because he’s known as being like the toughest guy.”
