President-elect Donald Trump has been working at a furious pace to nominate people to his Cabinet and fill the thousands of federal government jobs that need filling before his inauguration.
Trump’s latest Cabinet pick was Montana Rep. Ryan Zinke, a former Navy SEAL commander. Zinke has been nominated by Trump for the position of interior secretary, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
As interior secretary, Zinke would overseas millions of acres of federal lands and could potentially open some of them up to use by energy companies.
Zinke has mostly stuck to the Republican platform when it comes to environmental issues, though he has not supported efforts to sell federal land to state governments.
Zinke would be yet another former service member in Trump’s Cabinet. Trump promised that he would “make America safe again” and by nominating former military personnel, and he seems to be following through on that promise.
Reuters noted that Republicans had been hoping that Zinke would challenge Democrat Montana Sen. Jon Tester in 2018. If Zinke is confirmed, Republicans will need to find someone else to challenge the vulnerable Democrat.
In a statement released Thursday on Greatagain.gov, Trump lauded Zinke’s leadership skills and described him as someone who would be responsible in overseeing federal lands.
“He has built one of the strongest track records on championing regulatory relief, forest management, responsible energy development and public land issues,” Trump said. “As a former Navy SEAL, he has incredible leadership skills and an attitude of doing whatever it takes to win.”
Trump is appointing people he knows can get the job done and people he can trust to handle the immense work load required of a Cabinet member. With the collection of people Trump has named to his Cabinet, the next four years promise to be quite exciting!
