President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions to be his attorney general, new reports indicated Friday morning.
This was great news for conservatives, as Sessions was a hardliner with no patience for weak-kneed Republicans who preferred crafting bipartisan bills to pushing fervently ahead with the right’s bold agenda.
“Mr. Sessions, a former prosecutor elected to the Senate in 1996, serves on the Judiciary Committee and has opposed immigration reform as well as bipartisan proposals to cut mandatory minimum prison sentences,” The New York Times explained.
He was also critical of dodgy civil rights groups such as the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, both of which have a rich history of peddling anti-white racism and issuing threats of violence.
In a statement released Thursday night, Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby praised his 69-year-old peer, writing that Sessions would “bring integrity and immense expertise to the role of attorney general due to his decades of experience in the legal field and an impressive tenure on the Senate Judiciary Committee.”
“Jeff has also gained the deep respect of his Senate colleagues for his commitment to upholding the rule of law,” Shelby added, according to Politico.
One huge hurdle still remained, though — Sessions’ nomination had to be confirmed by Congress, and according to Politico it was likely that the “fight … could turn ugly” due to the senator’s past.
Allegations were made 30 years ago that Sessions had made racially insensitive remarks, though he has staunchly denied this.
“I am not the Jeff Sessions my detractors have tried to create,” he reportedly said in 1986. “I am not a racist. I am not insensitive to blacks. I have supported civil rights activities in my state. I have done my job with integrity, equality and fairness for all.”
If Sessions were to be confirmed, however, he would no doubt be the virtual antithesis of current Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who has continually prioritized racial politics and social justice over actual law and order.
