President-elect Donald Trump is making it clear to President Barack Obama’s political cronies: on Inauguration Day, you won’t be working for me.
Trump is serious about draining the swamp. Within a week after the Nov. 8 election, Obama’s many overseas political appointees received notice from the transition team that their terminations would be effective Jan. 20.
On Dec. 23, the new boss underscored that with a State Department memo. No exceptions, no extensions, no grace period, according to The Washington Examiner.
Although every president appoints large donors and supporters to plum diplomatic positions, Obama has shattered the record with 39 political appointees in his second term alone.
Unlike career diplomats, political ambassadors have term-specific assignments and are more ceremonial than strategic in nature. More than half of Obama’s picks were wealthy donors who either personally or indirectly provided more than half a million dollars to his 2012 campaign, according to ABC News.
“When you have people out there whose only reason for being an ambassador is their political connection to the outgoing president of a different party, it’s pretty logical to say they should leave,” Ronald Neumann, president of the American Academy of Diplomacy, told The New York Times.
Diplomats not only represent American policy, they can have substantial decision-making authority in their posts, so naturally the new president will not want Obama’s liberals doing the job.
Confirmation of new appointees can take months, so the return of existing appointees has traditionally been on a case-by-case business to ensure a continuous American presence in foreign embassies.
There is some concern that the abrupt change could rattle the nerves of foreign governments who already have the jitters about the new administration.
So far, the incoming Trump administration seems ahead of the curve on necessary startup decisions. Trump has a cooperative Republican congress, so it is hoped that confirmation hearings will be more expedient than they have in the past.
Looks like America’s about to wake back up!
