President Donald Trump’s campaign promise to crack down on “sanctuary cities” that harbor illegal immigrants is taking its next step in the form of an executive order to the Department of Homeland Security.
Through the executive order, titled “Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States,” Trump directed Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly to publish a weekly list of crimes committed by those in the country illegally, as well as any jurisdiction that has failed to honor federal requests to hold illegal immigrants arrested on suspicion of other crimes so they can be processed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
“Many aliens who illegally enter the United States and those who overstay or otherwise violate the terms of their visas present a significant threat to national security and public safety,” the order stated. “This is particularly so for aliens who engage in criminal conduct in the United States.”
The order also directed that federal funds would be withheld from cities and counties that refuse to cooperate with immigration laws and officials.
Although the directive did not specify which funds would be withheld, it provided that only federal funds required for law enforcement purposes would be excluded from the order.
Both the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security give various grants to local governments for a range of purposes.
The full order can be read here:
White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the order directed the DHS secretary to “look at funding streams that are going to these cities of federal monies and figure out how we can defund those streams,” according to the New York Daily News.
Of course, these cities could choose to forego federal funds in order to maintain their illegal immigration practices. However, the White House was hopeful that the executive action would be followed by congressional action targeting “sanctuary cities.”
“It’s not a one-step process,” Spicer said.
The directive will affect the nearly 300 cities that consider themselves sanctuaries for illegal immigrants, and it certainly won’t be the only action taken by Trump against them. A series of similar orders was expected to be unveiled coming days, according to the Portland Patch.
It’s about time we had a president who cared about the security and safety of our country and its citizens.
