President Donald Trump is proving during his first week in office that he means business.
Case in point: The State Department informed the Palestinian Authority that it was freezing the Obama administration’s stealthy transfer of $221 million to the organization on former President Barack Obama’s last day in office.
U.S. officials told Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah on Tuesday that the money was not expected to be handed over in the immediate future, a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity told The Times of Israel.
The State Department said Tuesday it would examine the transfer and possibly make adjustments to assure that the transaction reflected the administration’s priorities, Business Insider reported.
The Obama administration quietly authorized the transfer of funds despite objections from congressional Republicans. Outgoing Secretary of State John Kerry formally notified Congress of the transfer Friday morning, just hours before Trump took the oath of office.
If you’ve ever needed an example of how deceitful and underhanded the Obama administration was, this should do it.
The Washington Post reported that the funds had already been approved by Congress in budget years 2015 and 2016 but that a few Republican lawmakers had placed a hold on the money because they objected to actions taken by the Palestinian Authority. The holds weren’t legally binding, but it should be noted that holds in similar situations have generally been respected.
Obama felt no need to respect anyone’s wishes during his last week in office, and arguably throughout his tenure as president. His legacy has turned out to be one that reeks of betrayal.
It’s good to know that Trump is following through on his word and ensuring that Washington spends money wisely — something that will infuriate the many politicians on the Hill who’ve made careers of riding the taxpayer gravy train.
