President Donald Trump is set on keeping his campaign promise to shrink the federal government as he signed an executive order for a federal hiring freeze excluding the military.
CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller tweeted the news, just three days after Trump’s presidential inauguration.
According to Politico, Trump’s move will change the way Washington does business. Instead of making agreements and deals mainly for the good of the political class, a smaller government will be more ready and able to look out for the good of the people.
During his inaugural address, President Trump foreshadowed his executive order. “For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost,” he said. “Washington flourished, but the people did not share in its wealth.”
The lesson here is simple. Liberals and conservatives can argue about the specifics of individual government programs, but Trump’s executive action points out that the explosive growth of government — treating the government like a jobs program — is the most dangerous program of all.
For the safety and well-being of all Americans, military personnel and safety and health officials are excluded from the freeze. Included in the freeze are those employees who have just been hired but not yet trained for their jobs.
The Hill reported that Republicans and some Democrats had urged former President Barack Obama to institute the federal hiring freeze during the Obama administration. Instead, Obama only signed an order that froze federal employees’ salaries.
But Trump is listening to members of Congress. Also on Jan. 22, Trump made good on some other of his campaign promises. He signed an executive order to withdraw the United States from the Trans-Pacific partnership and another order banning foreign aid to groups that present abortion as a type of family planning.
With less than a week into his administration, President Donald Trump is already listening to the American people and keeping his promises.
