President Donald Trump is putting his pen where his mouth is. After a flurry of executive orders on issues from Obamacare to immigration, he was preparing to sign two executive orders severely curtailing U.S. involvement in the United Nations, according to The New York Times.
Both orders, now in draft form, will fulfill campaign promises Trump made repeatedly in the run-up to the November election.
Trump’s first order will eliminate funding for any United Nations agency or international organization that gives full membership to the Palestinian Authority or Palestine Liberation Organization.
It will also terminate funding for a wide range of organizations “controlled or substantially influenced by any state that sponsors terrorism.”
The order will further target funding for any group connected to systemic human rights violations or persecution, and it terminates funding for any foreign programs that fund abortions.
Finally, the order will create a committee to oversee a general 40 percent cut to myriad international operations, including aid to countries that “oppose important United States policies.”
Execution of the order would be devastating to the U.N., which relies on the U.S. for over half a billion dollars each year to fund its programs. The U.S. contributed more than $610 million to the U.N. for 2017, according to Fox News. This amount is the highest of all 193 contributing countries.
The second order will involve a review of all multilateral international treaties (between the U.S. and more than one other nation), with the goal of abolishing those that are not beneficial to the U.S.
The “Moratorium on New Multilateral Treaties” would target treaties not “directly related to national security, extradition or international trade.”
Trump has often been critical of the U.N. and the role the U.S. plays in its operations. In December, Trump was scathingly critical of the Obama White House and the U.N. Security Council for a Security Council resolution condemning the building of Israeli settlements.
Pro-U.N. liberals are going to hit the roof if Trump signs these orders, but after the new president has spent only a few full days in office, everyone should by now have gotten the memo: America First.
Trump is making good on his campaign promises as if he’s rolling down a checklist. We can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
