Billionaire businessman Donald Trump just won the presidency, and if the earlier dire warnings from the mainstream media and distraught Democrats were to be believed, there should be missiles flying overhead right now and Russian troops invading the country as we speak.
The liberal media raised the specter of an aggressive Russia — or perhaps an evil alliance between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin — to deflect attention from radical Islam and demonize Trump, but apparently their efforts didn’t influence voters very much.
As with most of the other predictions made by the media during the 2016 election cycle, that narrative simply didn’t reflect reality, as a statement released Wednesday by the Kremlin made clear.
According to Newsmax, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered a congratulatory message to Trump Wednesday, stating his hope that the two of them would be able to work together to improve relations between the U.S. and Russia.
An emailed statement made clear that Putin expressed his “hope for joint efforts to bring Russian-American ties out of crisis, resolve key international questions and find an effective response to the challenges of global security.”
The opportunity for the two nations to work together to improve relations came at a time when tensions were greater than at any time since the Cold War, featuring incidents of brinksmanship, conflicts in various regions like Syria and Ukraine and fears of cyber attacks.
“We heard the campaign statements of the future U.S. presidential candidate about the restoration of relations between Russia and the United States,” Putin said Wednesday at a ceremony for new foreign ambassadors.
“It is not an easy path, but we are ready to do our part and do everything to return Russian and American relations to a stable path of development,” he continued. “This would be good for both the Russian and American people and have a positive impact on the climate of world affairs.”
Putin’s government made clear that the first order of business between itself and a new Trump administration would be increased cooperation regarding ending the devastating civil war in Syria.
Hopefully that would include increased cooperation in the fight against the Islamic State group and other radical Islamic terrorist outfits as well, a common enemy that both Trump and Putin have placed in their sights.
