Iran’s president issued a stunning statement in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in Tuesday’s U.S. election.
According to The Times of Israel, President Hassan Rouhani stated that his country was not going to cooperate with Trump’s plan to dismantle the Iran nuclear deal.
“Iran’s understanding of the nuclear deal was that the accord was not concluded with one country or government but was approved by a resolution of the U.N. Security Council, and there is no possibility that it can be changed by a single government.”
The Iran nuclear deal, one of the major problems Donald Trump found with President Barack Obama’s administration, was enacted in 2015 and involved six nations. It sought to limit Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons capability in exchange for the lifting of sanctions and a huge payout.
Trump stated during his campaign that the deal was “disastrous” and that he would dismantle it if elected president.
That day has come, and as we know, Donald Trump is a man who gets things done. However, Iran was very quick to let America know that it was not interested in playing ball.
The American ambassador to Israel, Dan Shapiro, called on the incoming administration to keep the deal, saying that the accord was “very successful in doing what it was designed to do, and that is to block systematically each pathway Iran had to achieve a nuclear weapon. Obviously we recommend the next administration continue, because it does fulfill that function.”
While Israel was in agreement with Trump that the deal was a “historic mistake,” Shapiro said he believed U.S. and Israeli experts agreed that keeping the terms of the agreement would be the smart decision for our country.
Rouhani also stated that the United States “no longer has the capacity to create Iranophobia and to create a consensus against Iran.” He noted that the Iranian economy benefited from the deal and was “on a road where there is no possibility of going backwards.”
However, it is important to realize that Donald Trump is not an establishment figure. He is someone who represents the true will of the people, and they voted him into office on the basis of his promises to the country. One of those promises was to discontinue the Iran nuclear deal.
Iran can throw its hissy fits and issue its statements, but the Iranians must understand that Donald Trump does not want to sell out our country like Obama did.
