The FBI is warning that Al-Qaeda may be planning pre-Election Day attacks in New York, Virginia and Texas.

Intelligence officials have notified federal and local terrorism task forces of the threat, but the credibility is still being assessed, the New York Post is reporting.

The threat did not mention the specific sites that were targeted – or those cities were not released by authorities.

“The counterterrorism and homeland security communities remain vigilant and well-postured to defend against attacks here in the United States,” a senior FBI official said. “The FBI, working with our federal, state and local counterparts, shares and assesses intelligence on a daily basis and will continue to work closely with law enforcement and intelligence community partners to identify and disrupt any potential threat to public safety,” the official said.

It is not uncommon for terrorism threats to spike ahead of major events.

CBS News is reporting that the attacks could come on Monday.

As Election Day draws closer, law enforcement are planning for worst-case scenarios.

Earlier this week, an alert warned local police of “polling places” being seen as “attractive targets” for “lone wolf”-type attacks by individuals motivated by violent extremist ideologies, sovereign citizen or other extremist activity.
