President Donald J. Trump just kept a huge campaign promise.
American voters made it clear that one of the primary reasons they wanted to vote for Trump was because they believed he would choose a Supreme Court justice who would help reverse the liberal leanings of the current court. Trump pledged during the campaign to make a Supreme Court selection that was consistent with constitutional originalism and that would rein in the current court’s activism.
Trump did not disappoint, nominating Judge Neil Gorsuch of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.

A native of Denver, Gorsuch earned a B.A. at Columbia and is a graduate of Harvard Law School, where he was a Truman Scholar (and a classmate of future President Barack Obama). He also was a Marshall Scholar at Oxford University, where he earned a doctorate in law.
A George W. Bush appointee, Gorsuch has been popular among Christians for his work on the well-known religious freedom cases Burwell v. Hobby Lobby and Zubik v. Burwell, writing of the latter that “(Obamacare’s) mandate requires (the Little Sisters of the Poor) to violate their religious faith by forcing them to lend an impermissible degree of assistance to conduct their religion teaches to be gravely wrong.”
Additionally, Judge Gorsuch has opined that federal agencies may not have the constitutional authority to continue their broad interpretative powers. This is a good sign for conservatives looking for the court to rein in rogue federal agencies.
Gorsuch has been a strong proponent of the death penalty, denying many requests of death row inmates for stays of execution.

Interestingly, Gorsuch has not ruled on an abortion case, so he has not directly revealed his views on Roe v. Wade. However, his writing of books opposing euthanasia and supporting the value of human life could lead one to believe that he would support overturning the Roe verdict.
He is a textualist and an originalist but is thought to be facing a relatively uncontroversial confirmation process, according to National Review.
Gorsuch has great respect for the late Justice Antonin Scalia, and a similar judicial philosophy. He has called Scalia a “lion of the law.”

While there are some unknowns, this looks like a huge win for conservatives and a reason to applaud President Trump. He kept his word and we should give him credit for it.
