New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was one of the first major political leaders to join Donald Trump’s campaign, but the friendly relationship was short-lived as Christie was reportedly fired from the president-elect’s transition team.
Now, the former Republican presidential candidate has expressed interest in a totally unexpected position within the GOP — chairman of the Republican National Committee.
On Thursday, Politico reported that Christie had “thrown his hat in the ring” for the GOP leadership position when he told members of Trump’s team that he was interested and believed he would be a solid fit.
One unnamed source told Politico that the governor had embarked on an aggressive “full-court press” in hopes of securing the chairmanship.
The position became open after Trump’s team announced that the current RNC chair, Reince Priebus, would be taking on the role of Trump’s chief of staff.
Christie was originally in charge of overseeing the president-elect’s transition team, but after disagreements over staff picks and other alleged strife amongst the Trump team members, the governor was replaced by Vice President-elect Mike Pence.
Allegations surfaced that Trump adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner was behind the dumping of Christie, as the governor imprisoned Kushner’s father in 2005, according to USA Today. However, Kushner and Trump have both dismissed those claims.
Some have deemed the New Jersey governor a “natural” pick for RNC chair, as he formerly chaired the Republican Governor’s Association and has close ties to Republican leaders across the country.
Whoever Trump chooses for the position must receive final approval from the 168 members of the RNC, which is expected to vote on the matter in January at its annual winter meeting, according to Politico.
If chosen, Christie could finish his second and final term as governor in New Jersey and lead the RNC at the same time, NJ.com reported.
