Boy Nearly Decapitated After Riding Motorbike With Headphones… Don’t Let Your Child Do This

Parents, do your kids have headphones? Well, march right in and take them away. Don’t give them back until they’ve written 100 times, “I will not wear my headphones while moving faster than walking speed. Period.”

OK, our parenting styles may differ, but you get my drift.

Bradley Willoughby, 16, of Queensland, Australia, is lucky to be alive this Christmas after an everyday occurrence — wearing headphones — nearly turned to fatal tragedy.

Bradley, an experienced motorcyclist, was practicing jumps on the family farm a last week when he landed awkwardly, jamming the throttle, which flung him into a barbed wire fence, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.

His ankle was badly broken and his stomach severely slashed, but it was what his father saw that told him his son’s life hung in the balance. The cord from his son’s headphones had sliced into the boy’s neck after being caught in the barbed wire fence.

“No one realizes, but inside the headphone cord is fine copper wire which had cut through some of the muscle,” said his mother, Angie. “He is very lucky he didn’t cut his trachea. His father pulled the earphones out from inside the cut in his throat.”

Bradley broke both his tibia and fibula in the accident, requiring 2 large screws and a 6-inch plate to stabilize the leg. After surgeries on Monday and Thursday, the boy now faces months of rehabilitation, according to The Sun.

Many people wear headphones when exercising, relaxing, or jogging, but sometimes we just need to focus on the task at hand. That includes operating equipment. Like a motorcycle.

Although this has been a bad week for the Willoughby family, they want others to know just how lethal, under the right circumstances, wearing headphones can be. That little bit of flexible plastic houses a potentially deadly copper wire.

As for me, I’ll save my headphones for the treadmill.

If you’re a parent, you need to warn your children about this. They’ll thank you for it later.
