Bernie Sanders Defends Trump Voters at Rally

Former Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders took a stand for President Donald Trump’s supporters and claimed they are not the racists and homophobes that many on the left make them out to be.

Speaking Friday at a rally for the progressive PAC “Our Revolution,” Sanders told the crowd that those who think the people who voted for Trump are “racists and sexists and homophobes and ‘deplorable’ folks” are wrong, Fox News reported.

“I don’t agree, because I’ve been there,” he added.

You can hear Sanders’ comments here, beginning at the 1:11 mark:

The Vermont senator, a self-described socialist, went on to say that the key fact from the presidential election was not that Trump won, but that the Democrat Party lost — an issue he’s brought up before.

Sanders has chided the party for losing its connection with working-class white voters who previously voted for former President Barack Obama.

His remark regarding Trump supporters was an obvious reference to Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton, who said at a fundraiser in New York last September that half of Trump’s supporters were “deplorables … racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that,” she went on to say, burying herself in a proverbial hole from which she would find herself unable to escape.

Those words became a lightning rod during the rest of the election, highlighting not only the former fist lady’s unlikable nature but also demonstrating her inability to relate to most Americans.

Though Sanders did go on to criticize the president in his speech, he was able to point out at least one of the many problems facing the Democrat Party today: the fact that pointing fingers and calling names does not win elections.

While we don’t agree with much of what Sanders has to say on most issues, we commend him for having the strength to stand up and speak out against the narrative that the left has continued to push for the last 18 months.

Democrats would be wise to follow his example and let go of the name-calling and try listening to voters instead of alienating them.
