Former Republican presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson made an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Friday where the conversation inevitably turned to the slew of new sexual assault and harassment allegations lodged against GOP nominee Donald Trump.
According to Politico, that conversation quickly turned “combative” as a panelist and the host pressed Carson for a direct answer on whether he thought the women were lying in their accusations, resulting in Carson asking if the panelist’s microphone could be turned off so he could answer without interruption.
“I want to push you on these allegations of sexual abuse because you seem to be suggesting this morning in this interview with your description of the first class cabin and in previous interviews that these women are lying,” panelist Katty Kay said to Carson.
“The real reason women who have been sexually abused don’t come forward to talk about their stories is precisely this, that all too often they’re accused of being liars. Are you saying these women are lying?” she asked pointedly.
“That’s your characterization because you need to characterize it that way to try to make me the bad guy,” Carson replied.
The reply from Carson sparked an outburst of indignation from Kay and host Joe Scarborough, who both engaged in cross-talk while attempting to force an answer from the doctor.
Carson repeatedly declared “stop, stop, stop” to quiet the cross-talk before asking with a small grin, “Hey, can you turn her microphone off, please? Turn her microphone off so I can talk.”
“No,” Scarborough sternly replied. “It’s a simple question. Yes or no, do you believe these women are lying or not. Nobody’s trying to paint you as a bad guy. We just want an answer. Straight talk.”
“Listen, it doesn’t matter whether they’re lying or not,” Carson said, pointing a finger to emphasis his point. “What matters is that the train is going off the cliff. We’re taking our eye off of that and getting involved in other issues. It can be taken care of later.”
That prompted another flurry of questions and accusations from Kay, forcing Carson to hold up a finger and repeatedly ask her to quiet down and listen to his answer.
Eventually Carson was able to say that he was thrilled liberals were finally seemingly ready to talk about morality and hoped that there would also soon be a return of Judeo-Christian values to our society, but suggested that such conversations should occur “at a time other than a political election.”
Though Carson studiously avoided answering the question of whether he thought the women lodging accusations against Trump were lying, he did bring up a valid point.
Far too often the liberal media push certain narratives that from the start are designed to paint any who oppose even the premise of the narrative, much less the specifics, as bad guys who shouldn’t be listened to.
Carson also scored a point by noting how the liberal media selectively choose when they’d like to speak about morality and adhere to certain standards.
However, Carson will undoubtedly be maligned as a misogynistic jerk for having the gall to ask panelists to remain quiet while he spoke instead of having to holler over the cross-talk during his allotted time.
