Pastor Andrew Brunson of Black Mountain, North Carolina, has ministered in Turkey for 23 years, according to Fox News. However, he is now in serious danger after being locked up in Turkey last Friday on fabricated terrorism charges.
Oddly enough, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is the same man who President Barack Obama said in 2012 was a world leader with whom he enjoyed a good relationship.
“I think that if you ask them, (German Chancellor) Angela Merkel or (Indian) Prime Minister Singh or (South Korean) President Lee or Prime Minister Erdogan or (British Prime Minister) David Cameron would say, ‘We have a lot of trust and confidence in the president. We believe what he says,’” he said in an interview with Time.
Now Erdogan’s government has accused Brunson of having ties with Fetullah Gulen, whom some blame for the July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey.
Executive director of the American Center for Law and Justice Jordan Sekulow, representing Brunson’s family during this crisis, was outraged with the Turkish government.
“The government of Turkey — led by an Islamic party — has begun increased crackdowns on Christians, and Pastor Andrew, if convicted, may face years in prison based on extremely serious — and false — charges,” he said.
“We are launching a global campaign to call attention to his plight demanding that Turkey — a NATO member — release Pastor Andrew without delay,” Sekulow said.
Fox News reported that the family has broken their silence on Brunson’s persecution.
“Andrew’s strong faith has always been at the center of his life, and that has never been more evident than his pastorship in Turkey. His love and concern for the people of Turkey is unmistakable, as he has dedicated 23 years of his life serving them,” his family reportedly said in a statement.
Brunson is not a terrorist — he’s a believer in trouble.
