Democrat Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison has his eyes on becoming the head of the Democrat National Committee, but there’s something suspicious about his past that should spark the interest of everyone — including die-hard Democrats.
Ellison has disturbing connections to a group founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the global Islamist organization that seeks — often violently — to create Muslim states worldwide.
In 2008, Ellison made an unannounced trip to Mecca in Saudi Arabia that was reportedly paid for by the Muslim American Society, which was simply another name for the U.S. arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Chicago Tribune reported in 2004. MAS board member Asad Zaman joined Ellison on the trip.
Ellison said the trip was a transformational personal experience, and claimed he “didn’t want to turn it into a politics thing,” according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.
The House Ethics Committee saw things differently and opened an investigation into the matter after Ellison failed to disclose that the Muslim American Society paid $13,350 for his 16-day haj, or pilgrimage, according to The Jewish Press.
The committee opened the investigation because the trip was paid for by a local Islamic nonprofit and should have been reported as a gift to a public official.
When asked about his trip on Tuesday, Ellison said he was not “privy to the internal workings of the organization,” the Tribune reported. He added that he thought his personal itinerary allowed him to keep the trip’s cost private.
Tax records show the Muslim American Society of Minnesota received some $900,000 in taxpayer money in 2006 and 2007.
These kinds of associations are suspect, and they suggest several things of which the public should be cautious. One is the obvious connection to a known terror front group. Another is the matter of secrecy and the question of what else Ellison could be keeping from the public. Finally, we have the presumption that Ellison could be bought by nefarious groups (and trusted to remain quiet about it).
These are serious issues for Democrats because they are the same issues that led to the humiliating defeat of presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
For Ellison to make a religious journey is one thing, but to do so with the help of unsavory connections and unreported money is something else again.
