In one of the largest data breeches in history, adult dating and pornographic site company Friend Finder Networks has been hacked, and the details of better than 412 million accounts have been compromised, according to Leaked Source.

That’s correct. 412 million.

According to The U.K. Guardian, the October cyber attack resulted in “email addresses, passwords, dates of last visits, browser information, IP addresses and site membership status across sites run by Friend Finder Networks” all being exposed.

In other words, more people than constitute the entire population of the United States of America now have to worry about what some third party is going to do with this extremely sensitive information.

While some may laugh, many more cannot afford that luxury — they’re too busy scrambling to see what they can do to preserve their privacy.

Those who deal in cyber security were incensed. Managing director for security firm RelianceACSN, Peter Martin, reportedly said, “It’s clear the company has majorly flawed security postures, and given the sensitivity of the data the company holds this cannot be tolerated.”

There is, however, a much better way to avoid such embarrassment: Don’t have an account with a gigantic pornography and “hook up” company.

Hacked accounts are a fact of life — your email junk folder is probably full of messages sent from various hacked accounts right now.

It is amazing that men and women can take part in such activities and believe their private lives to be utterly safe. They aren’t. It really is best not to do it at all.

Nearly half a billion accounts — that figure is staggering. For context, assuming the world has a population of 7.5 billion (which is pretty close) and we use 412 million as an exact number, that means 5.5 percent of the world population had accounts at the time of the hack.

That’s profoundly sad.
